How it happened
Vitória's midfield pair settled this one between them. Erick and Matheuzinho scored two goals each, and both finished with a match rating of 10, the highest on the pitch.
Erick opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and Vitória led 1-0 at the break. The second half belonged to the hosts. Matheuzinho made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, Erick added a second of his own in the 61st, and Matheuzinho completed the scoring in the 74th.
Chapecoense never found a way back. Lucas Arcanjo kept the clean sheet, making four saves, which means he stopped every one of the visitors' four shots on target. He finished with a match rating of 7.9.
The numbers
The scoreline reflected the balance of chances. Vitória had 20 shots to 11, with eight on target to four, and an expected-goals total of 2.67 against 0.38. Chapecoense had more corners, six to three, and possession was close at 52% to 48%.
Matheuzinho's contribution went beyond the goals. He also had two assists and five key passes in 76 minutes, and his two goals came from 0.21 expected goals. Erick had 48 touches and two key passes in 77 minutes, scoring twice from 0.58 expected goals.
What it means
Vitória move to 36 points from 29 matches, 12th in the table, and end a recent run in which they had won three of their previous 10 league games and lost six. It is also their first clean sheet to be recorded in this report, but the four-goal margin is the figure that stands out.
Chapecoense stay 20th on 18 points from 28 matches, with three wins all season and a goal difference of -28. Over their last 10 they have won two, drawn three and lost five, scoring 11 and conceding 19.
The two clubs had met 13 times before, four of them draws, the latest a 1-1 in April. This result was far more one-sided than any of the recent meetings listed.
