How it happened

Anthoni made six saves and earned a match rating of 9, the highest on the pitch, as Internacional beat Corinthians 2-1 despite being outshot and outpassed.

Vitinho gave the home side the lead in the first minute, and that goal stood through to half-time at 1-0. Corinthians pressed for the equaliser for most of the evening without finding it.

The decisive spell came late. Alan Patrick made it 2-0 in the 77th minute, with a goal that carried an expected-goals value of 0.49. Luiz pulled one back for Corinthians in the 80th minute, which left 16 minutes of play, including stoppage time, for the visitors to find a second. Anthoni, on the pitch for all 96 minutes, kept them out.

The numbers

Corinthians had 72% of possession, 22 shots to 17 and 12 corners to three. Their expected goals came to 2.42 against 1.76 for Internacional, so the visitors' territorial edge was matched by chances.

Both sides put seven shots on target. Six of the visitors' seven were saved by Anthoni, and that margin separated the teams.

Alan Patrick was the creative force, with a match rating of 8.2, one goal, one assist and six key passes. Jose Juninho, the defender, earned a match rating of 7.5 in 73 minutes.

What it means

Internacional began the night 16th on 31 points, one behind 15th-placed Corinthians on 32. The three points lift them to 34, two clear of their opponents.

Corinthians arrived on a run of five defeats. Their record over 10 matches reads one win, one draw and eight defeats, an average of 0.4 points a match, and this result extends the slide.

Internacional's own last 10 had brought two wins, four draws and four defeats. This was a win built on goalkeeping and a quick start, not on control of the match.
