How it happened

Juan Brunetta decided a tight contest at Estadio Universitario, scoring in the sixth and 60th minutes to earn Tigres UANL a 3-2 win over CD Toluca. His match rating of 9.9 was the highest on the pitch.

Tigres led early through Brunetta's first, and G. Martínez doubled the lead in the 37th minute. Toluca pulled one back through Paulinho in the 42nd, and the first half ended 2-1.

The match turned on the stroke of half-time. A. Mohamed was sent off for Toluca in the 45th minute, leaving the visitors a player short for the whole of the second half. F. Viñas still levelled the score in the 54th minute, but Brunetta restored the lead six minutes later and Tigres held on.

The numbers

Tigres managed this with only 30% possession against Toluca's 70%. They still had more shots, 20 to 17, and more on target, 13 to eight. The expected-goals count was 1.74 to 1.24 in their favour, so the result matched the chances created.

Brunetta played 89 minutes, made 44 touches and set up four chances with key passes. His expected goals came to 0.35, which makes two goals a sharp return. Emiliano Gómez added an assist and a match rating of 7.5 in 69 minutes.

Toluca goalkeeper Luis García kept the margin to a single goal with 10 saves and a match rating of 7.7. Corners were close, with Tigres winning five and Toluca six.

What it means

The result runs against the table. Tigres are 11th with 13 points from 11 matches, while Toluca are second with 20 and a goal difference of +10.

Tigres' recent sequence of results reads win, loss, draw, draw, draw, and this win adds a first victory to that run of draws. Toluca's sequence reads draw, loss, then three wins, so the red card and Brunetta's finishing cost them ground against a side below them.
