How it happened

Gwangju FC beat Ulsan HD 4-3 in a K League 1 fixture that swung back and forth before the break and was decided by the home side's second-half goals. A. D. B. Loua scored twice, in the 36th and 77th minutes.

Yago put Ulsan ahead in the 30th minute. Loua levelled six minutes later, and J. Iredale made it 2-1 in the 39th. Ulsan answered before the interval, K. Young-gwon scoring in the 43rd minute to make it 2-2 at half-time.

The second half belonged to Gwangju. C. M. Shin put them 3-2 ahead in the 66th minute, and Loua added a fourth in the 77th. Ulsan did not stop. Yago converted a penalty in stoppage time to complete his brace and make the finish tense, but the home side held on.

The numbers

Seven goals came in a fixture whose previous five meetings produced far fewer. The most recent, on 5 July, finished 1-1, and Ulsan won 5-1 in April. Across 33 meetings, eight have ended in draws.

Loua and Yago each scored twice, one of Yago's coming from the penalty spot. Loua's two goals were both open-play finishes, and the pair of them accounted for four of the seven goals. Shots, possession and expected goals are not available for this match, so the scoreline and the sequence of goals are the clearest measure of what happened.

What it means

The result cuts against the table. Ulsan are second on 47 points; Gwangju are 12th on 18, a gap of 29 points. Gwangju's league record reads two wins, 12 draws and 17 defeats from 31 matches, and their last ten included one win, five draws and four defeats.

For Ulsan, the sequence reads loss, win, win, draw, win going in, so this is a setback rather than a slide. They have conceded 44 league goals in 31 matches and allowed three more here.

Gwangju scored four times in a single match, a notable return for a side with 25 league goals in 31 games.
