How it happened

Once Caldas beat Llaneros FC 1-0, and the goalkeeper decided it. Felipe Parra saved all five shots on target he faced and earned a match rating of 8.6, the highest of any player on the pitch.

The first half finished goalless. The only goal came in the 68th minute, when defender Jorge Cardona scored for the home side. His chance carried an expected-goals value of 0.19, so it was a modest opening that proved enough.

Llaneros then lost Jhon Vásquez to a red card in the 75th minute, seven minutes after falling behind. They were left with 10 players for the final stretch and could not find an equaliser against Parra.

The numbers

The statistics sit awkwardly with the scoreline. Llaneros produced 1.55 expected goals against 0.7 for Once Caldas, a gap of 0.85, and put five shots on target to the hosts' four. Parra's saves are the reason that gap never reached the scoreboard.

Once Caldas had more of the ball, with 60% possession to 40%, and took more shots, 15 to 10. Corners were close at five to four.

Parra also made 38 touches. Cardona had 61 touches in addition to his goal. Midfielder Juan Pablo Nieto, with a match rating of 7.4, supplied two key passes from 71 touches.

What it means

The win lifts Once Caldas to 49 points from 32 matches, in sixth place and 13 points clear of 14th-placed Llaneros, who have 36. Once Caldas have a goal difference of +9; Llaneros are on -5.

Both sides arrived with uneven recent records. Once Caldas had won four, drawn two and lost four of their previous 10, averaging 1.4 points per match. Llaneros had won two and lost seven of theirs, averaging 0.7.

The two clubs have now met three times in recent seasons. Once Caldas have won two, and the other meeting, a 1-1 draw, left Llaneros without a win in the series.
