How it happened
André Luiz scored twice in a 3-3 draw that Sporting Kansas City had looked unlikely to rescue. Portland Timbers led 3-1 after 64 minutes, then watched the home side level within eight.
David Pereira Da Costa put Portland ahead on 10 minutes. Janssen converted a penalty at 45+4' to make it 2-0, but Kansas City answered three minutes later, André Luiz scoring at 45+7' to cut the gap to 2-1 at the break.
Ariel Lassiter restored the two-goal lead on 64 minutes. J. Reynolds replied on 70', and André Luiz struck again on 72' to level the score at 3-3. Neither side found a winner, and there were no red cards.
The numbers
Kansas City created slightly more: 1.83 expected goals to Portland's 1.42, and 12 shots to nine. Each side put five on target. The home side also won six corners to one, though Portland had 54% of the possession.
André Luiz carried most of that threat. His two goals came from 1.45 expected goals, and he earned a match rating of 8.6 in 82 minutes. Lassiter matched that rating with a goal and an assist, plus one key pass, in 87 minutes. Da Costa, who scored the opener, was rated 7.9 after 65 touches.
What it means
The point is a small one for Kansas City, who sit 30th with 21 points from 28 matches and have won six of them. Their last five reads L-W-L-W-L, and this was a first draw in that run.
Portland are 19th on 35 points. They arrived on L-L-L-D-W, and a draw after leading twice leaves them with two points dropped from a strong position. In May they beat Kansas City 6-0 at home; this meeting was far tighter.
