How it happened
Guilherme scored twice in a 13-minute burst as Houston Dynamo came from two goals down to lead at the break, but Gabriel Pirani's 86th-minute goal earned San Diego FC a 3-3 draw.
San Diego began quickly. Dreyer converted a penalty in the 20th minute and Cédric Bakambu made it 2-0 two minutes later. Houston needed only two more minutes to respond, with Guilherme scoring in the 24th. Bogusz levelled the contest in the 33rd, and Guilherme added his second in the 37th to make it 3-2 at half-time.
The second half produced no goals until late in the game. Pirani found the equaliser in the 86th minute. There were no red cards.
The numbers
The match was far more one-sided in attempts than in the scoreline. San Diego had 17 shots to Houston's 10, six on target to three, and 10 corners to three, with 62% of possession. Their expected goals total was 2.5, against 0.87 for Houston.
Guilherme was the highest-rated player on the pitch, with a match rating of 9.5. He played 77 minutes, had 46 touches and two key passes, and was credited with an assist as well as his two goals. Those goals came from an expected-goals value of 0.25, which says Houston were clinical rather than busy.
For San Diego, Jeppe Tverskov had a match rating of 8.7 after 115 touches and two key passes over 90 minutes. Bakambu scored once and earned an 8.1 in 58 minutes. Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond made three saves and had a match rating of 6.
What it means
Houston are 10th on 46 points and San Diego 20th on 33, a gap of 13 points, so a share of the spoils suits the visitors' position better than the hosts' on paper. Houston's last ten matches read two wins, five draws and three defeats, and this was another draw in that run.
San Diego have scored 18 and conceded 24 in their last ten, and three more goals against will not ease that. The finish did match their expected goals, though. It was also the first draw in the sides' four meetings, after three decisive results that averaged 4.67 goals; this one produced six.
