How it happened

San Jose goalkeeper Angus Gunn was the reason this finished level. He made six saves and earned a match rating of 7.8, while Real Salt Lake put eight of their 22 shots on target.

The match was goalless at half-time. Real Salt Lake broke through in the 79th minute, when defender Luc De Fougerolles scored to put the home side 1-0 up.

San Jose, who had managed only two shots on target in the whole match, answered in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Jasinski scored in the 90+4th minute to make it 1-1. There were no red cards.

The numbers

Real Salt Lake led on shots (22 to 16), shots on target (eight to two) and expected goals (1.99 to 1.01). Possession was almost even at 51% to 49%, and each side won five corners.

De Fougerolles took the best rating on the pitch, 8.6, from his goal and one key pass. Juan Sanabria followed with 8.2, an assist and five key passes, and Noel Caliskan earned 7.8, also with five key passes.

Gunn's 7.8 was matched by Caliskan, and his saves kept San Jose's expected-goals deficit from becoming a defeat.

What it means

Real Salt Lake came in 21st on 33 points, with one win in their last 10 matches and a sequence of one win and four defeats in their last five. A point from a game they dominated on chances will feel like a missed chance to break that run.

San Jose, eighth on 47 points, are 14 points clear of their hosts. Their last 10 matches now read as five draws among three wins and two defeats, with the latest result adding another draw. Across their 42 meetings the clubs have 16 wins each and 10 draws, and this fixture added another to the draw column.
