How it happened
DC United beat New York Red Bulls 2-1 while attempting four shots to the visitors' 24, and they finished the match with ten men. Baribo scored from the penalty spot in the fifth minute, and Hefti added a second in first-half stoppage time, at 45+5, to make it 2-0 at the break.
Bartlett was sent off for the home side on 68 minutes. Three minutes later Choupo-Moting pulled a goal back for New York, but the visitors could not find an equaliser against a side a player short.
The numbers
The match statistics point firmly one way. New York held 75% of possession, took 24 shots to four, won 11 corners to three and had six shots on target to three. Their expected goals total of 2.73 was 1.50 higher than DC United's 1.23.
DC United were far more direct in front of goal: two goals from three shots on target. New York scored once from six. Both home goals arrived before half-time, which meant the hosts were protecting a lead for the whole second half, and for the final stretch with a player fewer.
What it means
The result cuts against the table. DC United are 27th with 30 points from 27 matches, while New York are 18th with 36 points from 28. In their last ten matches DC United have two wins, three draws and five defeats, with 18 goals conceded; New York have three wins, two draws and five defeats.
The two clubs have met 52 times, with 15 draws, and their previous meeting, on 22 April, finished 4-4. This one was far lower scoring, and it went to the side that created much less.
