How it happened

San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr made nine saves to keep Colorado Rapids to a 1-1 draw, a match rating of 7.5 for a keeper who faced 11 efforts on target.

Colorado took the lead through Donavan Phillip in the 27th minute and led 1-0 at the break. The home side had the territory and the chances, but could not add a second.

San Jose levelled in the 57th minute when Romney scored. It was one of only three shots on target the visitors managed, and it was enough to square the game.

Phillip was taken off after 59 minutes, two minutes after the equaliser. Colorado pushed on without him, but Edwards stayed unbeaten for the remainder of a 96-minute match.

The numbers

Colorado led almost every column. They had 63% of possession to San Jose's 37%, took 13 shots to nine and won six corners to three. The expected-goals count was 0.99 to 0.60, a narrower gap than the shots on target suggest.

Phillip earned a match rating of 8, the highest on the pitch. Besides his goal he created two chances for team-mates and had an expected-goals figure of 0.34 from his own efforts.

Paxten Aaronson was next on 7.6, with an assist and two key passes in 96 minutes and 37 touches. Edwards, on 7.5, completed the top three and had 55 touches, a high figure for a goalkeeper.

What it means

Colorado are 14th on 37 points from 28 games, with a goal difference of zero. San Jose are ninth on 46 points, a gap of nine, and have a goal difference of plus 10.

Over their last 10 matches, Colorado have won four, drawn three and lost three, scoring 12 and conceding 14. San Jose have won three, drawn four and lost three, scoring 13 and conceding 16. Neither side has pulled clear of the other in that stretch, and this result kept it that way.
