How it happened
Ronaldo Martinez gave Vélez Sarsfield the lead twice at the Jose Amalfitani, and twice Club Atlético Platense came back. The second equaliser, from F. Zapiola in the 88th minute, secured a 2-2 draw in Matchday 11 of the Clausura's Group A.
The fixture, which kicked off at 22:00 UTC on 5 October under cloudy skies at 18C, started fast. Martinez scored in the fifth minute, and Platense needed only two more to reply through B. Merlini. It stayed 1-1 at half-time.
Martinez restored the home lead in the 54th minute, and Vélez held it until two minutes from time, when Zapiola levelled. Sebastian Zunino showed no red cards.
The numbers
The statistics favour the visitors. Platense had 53% of the ball, took 16 shots to Vélez's 10 and produced 2.61 expected goals against 1.95. Vélez were more accurate, though, with six shots on target to Platense's four. Corners were level at four apiece.
Martinez and Platense defender Agustín Lagos shared the highest match rating on the pitch, 7.7. Martinez scored twice from 1.15 expected goals with 31 touches. Lagos had 98 touches, three key passes, one assist and 0.82 expected goals of his own, a heavy attacking contribution for a defender.
Platense goalkeeper Juan Cozzani made four saves for a rating of 7, and midfielder Martín Barrios earned a 7.2 from 68 touches and one key pass.
What it means
Vélez's recent record across 10 matches reads four wins, six draws and no defeats, with 16 goals scored and 11 conceded, a rate of 1.8 points per match. A draw is familiar territory: six of those 10 have ended level.
Platense arrived with a weaker sequence, two wins, four draws and four defeats in 10, scoring nine and conceding 12 for a point per match. On these numbers, earning a point away from home with the bigger shot count is an encouraging return.
The result also adds to a closely fought series. Before this game, the sides had met seven times, with two Vélez wins, two draws and three Platense wins, at an average of 1.86 goals a game. This four-goal match was livelier than most.
